Story[edit | edit source]

Mutare is an ambitious young Dungeon Overlord who took over the holdings of Lord Rauric. In Nighon, since land is gained through conquest, not inheritance, Mutare looks to defeat her neighbors to increase her own power. She first sets her sights on OrdwaldOrdwald Ordwald, whom she believes an to be aging and ineffective. Mutare invades his lands only to find Ordwald gone and several other young lords (Caomham and Preuet) opportunistically seizing his lands. Puzzled by Ordwald's absence, Mutare nevertheless overpowers the other lords and seizes Ordwald's lands. It is then that Mutare realizes that Ordwald has left in pursuit of the fabled Vial of Dragon BloodVial of Dragon Blood - an artifact that can turn a person into a sentient dragon! Seeing this as her path to Nighon nobility, Mutare leaves General Miah and General Sengana in charge of her new and old holdings and sets out after Ordwald.

Mutare pursues Ordwald to the Lower Caverns where she once again find herself competing with Lord Caomham and Lord Preuet. News of the quest for the vial is out and many other lords of the Nighon Borderlands begin probing the defenses of the absent lords. The lands of Lord Caomham and Lord Preuet are overrun, but Mutare's generals manage to successfully defend her lands. Mutare defeats Caomham and Preuet again and pursues Ordwald to the Deep Caverns, leaving her new lands in the Lower Caverns under General Miah's control.

Once in the Deep Caverns, Mutare successfully fends off Ordwald and reaches the Vial of Dragon Blood before him. She immediately drinks the blood and transforms into a red and black dragon.

Alternative biography Lost Lore[edit | edit source]

The following biography appeared on the official (now-defunct) 3DO website:

Born to a woman of weak will and no money, Mutare was left to her own devices at the tender age of 12. There was nothing tender about the girl who had grown up in a harsh world. Her first weapon was a bastard sword, almost as tall as she was.
Dragons recognize ambition and power, especially when it is concentrated in one individual. Mutare has plenty of both, along with the courage and drive to fuel her ambition. She has an affinity for the powerful beasts, and under her command, they perform exceptionally well. With this deadly combination, an Overlord recruited her into his army, wanting her to become his general. She would do much more.
Using every last ounce of determination and will power, Mutare moved through the ranks quickly. Soon she was a general under a Dungeon Overlord named Rauric, but resented his control over her. For Mutare it was imperative no one else ever control her destiny. She coveted the position of Dungeon Overlord. All she needed was the opportunity to replace her condescending and insulting master.
He provided such an opportunity. During a large feast, after a few glasses of strong beer, he implied a woman’s worth lie in her physical appearance. Foolishly he had been looking Mutare’s way. Insulted, she jumped to her feet and challenged the Overlord. Thinking the young hothead wasn’t serious, the Overlord laughed and accepted the challenge. He playfully dueled with Mutare, then with a quick flash of her blade, Mutare beheaded the Overlord. No one challenged her authority as she seized the reigns of power.
Now the young Mutare aspires to be Queen of Nighon.
